Here's everything you need to know about getting started with A Walk in the Park...
A Walk in the Park is more than just another doggy daycare. We work to make your dog a part of our family and to cultivate a safe, healthy environment for dogs to learn and grow.
When applying for our services, please consult the following information. After that, you can create an account through Gingr to purchase service packages and make reservations for your pup!
All dogs that come to our ‘ranch’ for any service need to provide us with proof of vaccination: dogs need to be up to date on rabies, DHLPP, Bordetella, Canine Influenza Virus H3N2 and H3N8 and dogs must have a negative fecal exam. All vaccines must be administered by a licensed veterinarian.
You can email us a copy of those records at email@example.com, or have your vet fax them to 419-754-2125. We also require a signed release and waiver form. When signing up to Gingr, you will be able to digitally sign this form.
If you would like to see our facility before you decide to sign up for our services, we offer tours on Saturday afternoon between 1 and 3 pm. You can bring your dog if you like, but you don't have to. We don't evaluate a dog at that point, that has to happen during actual day care. Tours are by appointment only.
Scheduling Day Care & Boarding
Once you are signed up through Gingr and have submitted all necessary information, you can create reservations for boarding or day care through the Gingr app or select specific services such as grooming or training. We are currently in the process of switching our reservations and services over to Gingr. You can read more about these changes on our blog here.
If you have any questions, you can contact us by phone at 419-475-4101 or by emailing us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Give us ample notice when you would like to board, to make sure that we have room. Boarding and day care are on a first come, first serve basis and once we are full, we cannot accommodate more dogs.
Evaluating Your Dog
We don't offer a separate evaluation. Aggressive dogs obviously don't belong in day care, but some other issues that require attention, like over-exuberance or shyness, might not be evident right away.
Think of a child that goes to a new school and doesn't know anybody. At first, he or she will observe the situation around them without interacting much. It takes a couple of visits to day care or a couple of nights of boarding before the dogs become comfortable enough to be themselves.
Once we get a clear idea of what the dog is like, we can see if we need to spend more time with this dog and if there is a need to train with the owner or suggest changes that can occur at home that might help improve the dog's behavior. We will discuss this and make recommendations; we will try to find solutions, so we don't have to bar the dog in question from day care.
The reason we can stay cage free and welcome all breeds is that we temperament test each dog.
At the time of the temperament test:
- You must have created and completed an account on Gingr
- Submitted records from your dog's Veterinarian showing proof of current Rabies, Distemper, Bordetella*
- Submitted a record of a negative fecal exam within the last 6 months.
*Please note: the Bordetella vaccine must be administered at least one week before the first visit.
More daycare information:
- If your dog is a puppy and is too young for the Rabies vaccine, they can still come to day care. However, puppies must be at least 12 weeks old to attend day care.
- We do not accept dogs under 8 lbs. for boarding or day care because their size makes them too vulnerable to injury when interacting with other dogs.
- All dogs must be spayed or neutered by 7 months of age.
- All dogs must be on a quality flea and tick prevention treatment.
- A routine of heart worm prevention treatment is important.
- All dogs must have a regular collar with a plastic snap and traditional leash.
- All dogs must be in good health, without any illness, two weeks before visiting.
Drop Off Information
When dogs come into our facility, they have to be on a regular leash. We require that all dogs wear a collar with a plastic quick-snap buckle. Please adjust the collar to the right size, where just two fingers fit under the collar. A loose collar that the dog can slip out of is a serious safety risk. When dogs enter day care, we have to take off all collars, for safety reasons.
Food & Medication
For dogs that are staying overnights, or dogs that get lunch or dinner while they are here for the day, we ask that everybody brings their own food. We don't want to switch foods abruptly since that can make dogs sick. Give us the food conveniently packaged, with feeding instructions. If dogs are taking medication, give us clear instructions, and we will take care of it at no additional charge.
Pick Up Information
When you are coming to pick up your dog, give us a call when you are on your way; it will give us the time to brush out your dog and get all the belongings up front, thus speeding up the checkout process.
